Lack of transportation options impact every aspect of a person’s life, from necessary medical care and the prospect of employment, to the ability to attend a social event and build community relationships.  For at least the past decade the lack of transportation options for persons with disabilities has consistently been identified as a barrier to community life.

The Council opted to address the issue of transportation from a systems change standpoint, and created the Montana Coordinated Transportation Handbook. This unique “how-to” guide is a hands-on tool to develop a coordinated system of transportation utilizing public funded vehicles.    Persons interested in developing a coordinated system can begin with the communication model of just talking to each other about where their vehicles are and why, to the option of creating a fully consolidated system.

This Handbook as been disseminated statewide to community based human service providers, self-advocacy organizations, legislators, county and tribal governments.  This Handbook has been hailed as a model for transportation coordination by the Federal Transit Administration.  The Handbook is available as a download from this website.
